Anyone who is constantly tired and listless or who repeatedly has a cold may have an unbalanced acid-base balance. In such disorders, naturopathy assumes that the body is overacidified. Changing your diet to include balancing fruits and vegetables can help balance the acid-base balance. It is certain, even if there is criticism of this theory, that acids are constantly produced in the body during normal metabolism. And we also constantly take in various acids through our food. However, since the organism depends on a stable pH value, it has developed various mechanisms for regulating it.

Alkaline substances, especially minerals, buffer acids and neutralize them. In addition, they are constantly released through breathing air, sweat or urine. If this is not sufficient, according to naturopathic teachings, the excess acids are deposited in the connective tissue or the joints. Possible consequences of this are fatigue, muscle, joint and/or headaches, a susceptibility to infections or even heartburn. In addition, an acid-base imbalance has the reputation of promoting osteoporosis. This is because the organism, in its effort to always ensure balance, uses minerals from the bones.

To restore the balance in the acid-base balance, alternative practitioners rely on the right food in the form of fruit or vegetables, ideally as part of a cure lasting several weeks. It is recommended that around 70 to 80 percent of so-called alkalizers be consumed daily. These are mainly vegetable foods rich in minerals, such as vegetables, lettuce and fruit. Even very sour-tasting fruits are said to have an alkaline reaction in the body. Fresh herbs at meals are considered an excellent addition. In addition, you can take alkaline preparations.

Meat, fish, sausage, whole grain cereals and dairy products are metabolized acidically and should only make up 20 to 30 percent of the food. Sweets, white flour products and alcohol should be avoided completely. Exercise in the fresh air is also important in order to exhale more acids. Sweating sports are considered to be particularly effective, as the negative substances can also be excreted very well through the skin. Another option is regular visits to the sauna. The liver also needs a lot of attention, because it must ensure that our blood does not become “acidic”. Foods containing bitter substances such as lamb’s lettuce, rucola, endive or artichokes support the work of the organ.

Vegetables for a good acid-base balance

  • Brussels sprouts are a good source of vitamin K, which the body needs for strong bones. If the acid-base balance is not in order, osteoporosis also occurs more frequently.
  • Although it tastes so sour, apple cider vinegar creates alkaline substances in the body. It can even relieve heartburn. To do this, add a teaspoon to half a glass of water and drink.
  • Potatoes are good for the acid-base balance if you cook them with sea salt. This way, the ratio between sodium and potassium is just right.
  • Raw, unheated sauerkraut is full of living microorganisms that support metabolism.
  • Ginger gets the metabolism going.

Homemade skin care alkaline bath

To balance one’s acid-base balance, one can also easily prepare a skin-caring alkaline bath oneself. The skin is the largest organ of the human body and should release a corresponding amount of acids during an alkaline bath.

To do this, dissolve 100 grams of baking soda in a bowl of warm water and pour the mixture into a filled tub (water temperature should be about body temperature). Add five drops of natural lavender oil, as it is said to support detoxification. The bathing pleasure, which lasts about 45 minutes, makes the skin very soft, because its refatting properties are stimulated.
