Companion Planting: Plants that help each other against pests, positively influence your growth and thus the harvest. Use the nutrients from the soil optimally.

These plants help each other against pests

Which vegetables are compatible in the bed?

The mixed culture in the garden only really makes sense if the plants are in a good neighborhood. Some plants, such as peas and potatoes, there´s no love lost between them. Therefore, within the mixed culture in your bed, you must make sure that the cultivated plants harmonize with each other. Mixed culture neighborhood plants complement each other in “above and below” – so they do not get into the enclosure with either the leaves or the root system. So each plant gets not only enough space but also the necessary nutrients.

Not only the neighborhood within a mixed culture is important, but also the fundamental intolerance of some species among themselves. Some plant genera do not tolerate each other at all. In addition to plants of the mustard family and of the order Umbelliflorae, they also include the legume/bean family. Between these plants you should therefore keep sufficient distance, so they can develop optimally. In addition, you should pay attention in your mixed culture that some plants grow poorly if the preculture consisted of “bad neighbors”.

Also in relation to the mixed culture, there are always contradictory information. For example, the “famous” partnership between onions and carrots. Even if it is said over and over again that they get each other pests off one´s neck, they are still not really good neighbors in the mixed culture. The reason for this is that onions and carrots have different demands on the amount of water. While carrots need quite a bit of water in late summer and even in autumn, onions on the other hand tend to need less during this time. Because onions that are to be stored, need less water, so that the leaves can dry. Ideal, in the need for water, as a neighbor in the mixed culture for the carrots would be leek. But many gardeners still have good experiences with carrots and onions side by side. Often, this also depends on the soil itself or both vegetables were grown on a raised bed, for example.
